STORY BY VI HUGHES
The spa at the 500-room luxury Haikou Hotel at Mission Hills in Shenzhen, China is not what you would normally expect at a spa. It’s the world’s biggest Hot Springs and Spa Theme Park!
It's also attached to the world’s largest golf course - which incidentally had 12 championship courses on the site when they both opened in 2010, but now has 22 courses!
Set in the world’s largest volcanic mineral springs valley, it’s no wonder imaginations ran wild when designing the complex, which now includes 168 hot and cold pools and almost 100 water features.
With treatments covering wellness and physiotherapy traditions from five continents, it’s in a class of its own.
The spa theme park stretches over 65,000 square metres (or more than 16 acres), which is slightly bigger that America’s biggest stadium, “The Big House” in Michigan; 60% bigger that the Melbourne Cricket Ground; and three times bigger than the colosseum in. Rome!
Comparing it with other spas is simply not fair. With a 500-metre bamboo wall entrance, one can only describe it as a spa on steroids.

HAIKOU HAS IT ALL: 500-ROOM HOTEL, 22 CHAMPIONSHIP GOLF COURSES, CLUBROOMS, HOT SPRINGS AND SPA
Most people will surrender and say it’s the best overall spa in the world, and they are probably right. But putting pure size and ingenuity aside, it’s the treatments and standards of the massages and other services that count, and there are plenty that rank highly in this regard.
The Haikou Spa is just what you need after 18 holes of golf at Mission Hills golf resort.
Or, as was the case for me, while your husband is being challenged by any one of the 22 world championship courses.
I was fortunate to enjoy multiple treatments over the course of our week’s stay, experiencing the sauna, steam room and both the hot and cold Jacuzzis.
The HAIKOU philosophy of spas is based on a sense of both balance and harmony, and after each experience I can honestly say I was totally relaxed and refreshed.
During my first visit I chose the extensive Vitality relaxing spa package. I must admit I don’t remember the whole experience because it was so relaxing I took a couple of short naps!
Two-and-a-half hours of stimulating massaging with a rebalancing body wrap was like a taste of heaven. While I gasped a couple of times when the wonderful therapists discovered some tight muscles I didn’t know were there, the overall experience was 10-plus and I certainly felt fully rejuvenated.
With the overall body feeling better that it has for quite a while, three days later I returned for the Diamond Oxyjet Face Care treatment, which is focused on the face, neck and eyes. Taking some 90 minutes, this treatment is designed to reduce age spots and wrinkles without injecting foreign substances, which made it right up my alley.
I was told that 99% oxygen was ‘injected’ into the epidermal layer of the skin through pressurised pulses, re-energising the skin almost instantaneously.
All I can say is that it didn’t hurt and I looked and felt refreshed. Hubby even said “Wow, you look amazing” – but I’m not 100% sure that was because he was planning on another round of golf the next day.

I was told that the combination of Eastern, Western and Chinese treatments and healing processes was the key to the spa’s rave reviews, and I will echo those sentiments.
It should be mentioned that they also have special sports treatments, particularly for men!
