STORY BY PAUL HUGHES, NOVEMBER 2022
Whether on a cruise, an international flight or just holidaying at home or in a new country, most people have one burning desire when they disembark - and that’s finding a great coffee (or in some cases, a wine or beer)!
We found just the spot in a recent cruise to Noumea in New Caledonia, where we discovered arguably the best coffee place in the South Pacific, and even beyond.
While the Covid pandemic put a halt to many world travels, Noumea took advantage of the lull and over three years built a massive new 5000 square metre shopping complex at the Port of Noumea, known as “Noumea Quays’.
They have brilliantly transformed the old ferry docks near the entrance to the city into a spectacular waterfront precinct, on the doorstep of the cruise terminal.
Home to a number of shops, bars and restaurants it has rapidly become a popular place for locals to catch up for a meal and relax with a beautiful outlook.
While new businesses are still moving in, Mr COFFEE NY arrived mid-2021 and showcases the best range of coffee we have found anywhere in the world.
Staples like short black, expresso (remember, New Caledonia is a French overseas territory, hence the spelling), double expresso, cappuccino, flat white and mocaccino are naturally to be expected.
But they are only a few of some 20 delicious choices one can make.
Then there are the ‘Les Gourmands’, (rough translation French for gourmet delicacies) such as creme brulee, an amazing array of delicious mouses and many more tempting treats.
All served with amazing views and free wifi, it’s definitely a venue that will be inundated every time a cruise ship of several thousand tourists dock.
