There are main types of cruising, with more than 60 recognised ocean, river and specialty cruise lines traveling to, from or throughout almost every country around the world.
Ocean cruise ships are based in dozens of countries and collectively visit most world destinations, stretching from those dotted around the equator to the Arctic and Antarctic circles and everything in between.
Each style of cruise offers a vastly different experience, with all three having significantly different size and styles of ships, operational processes and types of holidays offered.
We hope the following summaries help you choose your next cruising holiday.

Ocean Cruising
|
Ocean Cruise ships travel across or around the Antarctic (Southern), Arctic, Atlantic, Indian or Pacific oceans and nearby seas.
They usually carry 3,000 to 4,000 passengers, with newer ships over 6,000. Ocean cruise ships have more facilities than other cruise types, with multiple pools and spas; casinos; retail outlets; tons of kids activities; many speciality cafes and restaurants; and heaps of entertainment ranging from live shows in theatres to musicians in bars and multiple crafts, sports and other social activities. River Cruising
|
River cruises sail inland waterways and around harbours and bays, ranging from just a few days to ships with accommodation and trips sometimes lasting weeks.
They are usually based in a city on a major inland river. River cruises with accommodation are very popular in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, Great Britain, North America and South America. There are around 1,000 recognised river cruise destinations, with vessels catering for between 150 and 250 passengers, and occasionally as few as 10. More |
Specialty Cruising
|
Niche cruising, or specialty cruises, usually have one specific focus.
They are self descriptive, such as 'Christmas Lights', 'Whale Watching', "Sunset Champagne Cuises" or 'Catch and Cook Crayfish' tours and most usually last only a few hours. The more specific niche cruises encourage guests to immerse themselves in rich local cultural experiences, sometimes incorporating seminars and famous guest speakers. Popular niche cruises often feature geologists or naturalists; licenced local guides for exploring; or the chance to experience regional foods and wines. |
