If you are ever heading to Hong Kong, it will be difficult to find a better place to stay than the Kowloon Hotel in Tsimshatsui, the heart of the city’s renowned shopping precinct.
An older building that has been brilliantly renovated, the Kowloon has three great features:
- Above average quality of furnishings and fittings
- An outstanding selection and array of eating experiences
- The realtor’s favorite phrase: Location, Location, Location
We looked at each area closely:
Location
Situated at Nathan Road, the hotel sits on top of a shopping centre that opens onto endless other shopping centres. Every possible shopping experience can be enjoyed during a short walk.
The hotel is directly linked to the rail network, and a stroll past coffee shops, bars, restaurants and cafes took us to the shores of Victoria Harbor, with its spectacular views, ferry terminals and bustle of watercraft of every shape and size.
Another bonus was the hotel’s free shuttle bus to various locations around the city.
Accommodation
We enjoyed a superior double room of about 20 square metres (okay size for Hong Kong), with a separate bathroom and workable work/relaxation area with high speed internet facilities.
The renovations were good, with air conditioning, safe, tea and coffee-making, ample wardrobe space for a holiday, shower and bath (with hairdryer), etc. Importantly there were no damp or musty smells and the bed was firm but very comfortable.
With over 700 rooms (including seven suites) the hotel has been ideally developed to suit every type of traveler – business singles or groups, with special access to board rooms or convention areas; couples on a romantic getaway; and families

Food
Even if you don’t stay at the Kowloon, a visit for just the dining experience is well worthwhile.
The amazing 66-metre long buffet table in the Window Café must be seen to be believed, if only to reassure you that this is probably one of the finest buffets you will find anywhere.
There was an unlimited choice of foods from practically every country in the world, and none of it was sitting and simmering away – a constant bevy of chefs were cooking everyone’s selections and bringing out new offerings.
Importantly, it was obviously fresh and prepared with pride, and if your tastes could not be satisfied by 66 metres of selections, there was even an extensive a la carte menu!

The Kowloon also has many other dining options – a nice welcome on arrival was the Coffee Corner adjacent to check-in where you could revive after your trip (or hectic day’s shopping) with a wide selection of freshly-brewed coffees and other drinks, as well a choice of fresh sandwiches, salads and tempting cakes.
Equally famous as the buffet is the authentic dim sum and other Chinese dining choices in the Loong Yat Heen restaurant, and there are several other food spots we didn’t get to.

The window cafe overlooks the famous "Golden Mile of shops along Nathan Road. It serves an International a la carte menu as well as breakfast, lunch, dinner, and supper buffets.
When one assesses value (rooms for the standard offered are not expensive), quality of service and facilities, and the convenience of being located in the heart of the city close to all forms of transport, the Kowloon Hotel is one place we will definitely go back to.
Feedback: "Wow! My daughter and I are off to Hong Kong in September and we'll certainly look at what Kowloon Hotel has to offer". - Mary Ackersfield, New York.
