Segway Tours, Western Australia
The Preparation and Safety Training
Our next adventure was with Segway Tours WA. I was very excited about this new experience.
They say “it’s the most fun you can have standing up” and it’s true!
Segway Tours WA is an independent company set up on Rottnest Island in December 2013. They are located at the Kingston Barracks which is a bit of a walk from the ferry however if you choose to hire a bike for the day it is easy to find. Segway Tours WA can also be found in Perth city http://segwaytourswa.com.au
The instructor who greeted us was Paul, a very friendly guy who went through the basic introduction and safety training needed to ride the Segway.
Each rider was fitted with a radio transmitter and earpiece to enable us to hear instructions from Paul and the commentary on the area as we were riding.
One by one we completed our initiation, which surprisingly was extremely easy.
Within a few minutes we were all very comfortable and confident in riding the Segway and on our way to an amazing new adventure.

The Adventure begins
There are two different tours that can be booked on Rottnest.
1. Kingstown Explorer - A one hour tour which is predominantly on-road
2. Fortress Adventure - A one and a half hour tour for the more adventurous, that takes you off road along some pretty hairy paths.
It is very easy to become super confident when all is going well and soon we were all manipulating steep dirt roads and rocky terrain.
The views were fantastic taking in the breathtaking scenery and absorbing the natural beauty of Rottnest.

The tour took us to some really great spots including the main vantage points where soldiers guarded the coastline during the war. There were remnants of old buildings and guns as well as amazing views across the ocean and across to Fremantle.
Paul’s commentary was very interesting. I hadn’t realized there was so much history on the island. We also found that a lot of the vegetation on the island was unique and only found on Rottnest.
Quokkas’ were everywhere on Rottnest. They are a small, very friendly marsupial related to the kangaroo and most times don’t even mind having their picture taken.
They are predominantly only found on Rottnest Island and therefore have become part of the tourist attraction along with other wild life such as the peacocks that roam the island.
There were so many photo opportunities along the way it is really important to remember your camera.

Segways are not allowed to be ridden in public areas in most Australian states and there are several trials being conducted to determine if they will be allowed in some tourist areas.
As a result, riding a Segway on Rottnest is a very unique experience.
I would HIGHLY recommend it.
It really is “the most fun you can have standing up!”
