Shenzhen is very crowded due to the fact that so many people are moving here to try to find employment. The local government has recently made city-wide environmental improvements in an effort to combat problems caused by overpopulation. In recognition for these improvements, Shenzhen was awarded the Garden City Award in 2000.

Thanks to its developed economy, it is easy to get to Shenzhen quickly and comfortably by air, train or ship. What's more, Shenzhen is the only city in China that provides three modes of transportations for simultaneous comings and goings. Unfortunately transportation in the city is hit-or-miss due to the large population. However, the number of transportation options available helps to counteract the problems caused by crowding. There are quite a large number of hotels which frequently host businessmen and visitors from all over the world.

Shopping
Shenzhen was one of the first Chinese cities to open its doors to the outside world. Influenced by its rich neighbour-Hong Kong, Shenzhen is a prosperous metropolis. There are not too many special souvenirs for visitors to take home. But it has a good selection of department stores and shopping centres, where everything from basic commodities to high-quality brands can be found. The ideal destination for those who are addicted to shopping. Electrical appliances, fashionable and reasonable clothing, jewellery and seafood are some of the things to buy in Shenzhen.
Shenzhen is divided distinctly into several zones of shopping centres. Dongmen Pedestrian Street is the No.1 shopping centre of Shenzhen. Various kinds of shops, restaurants and cinemas are here. In Hua Qiang Bei you will find numerous electrical products.

LuoHu Commercial City Shopping Centre is a popular place for day trippers from Hong Kong with Five floors and over 700 shops. Fakes galore from handbags, jewellery, DVDs electronics and anything you can think of. There are plenty of tailors and a fabric market if you'd like to have suits, dresses, shirts or anything made within a couple of days. Although some are excellent quality and fit, some are not so good so it is advised to try them on before you pay. We bought several business shirts and because we were in a hurry, didn't try them on only to find out when we got home the sleeves were too short in length. Other times I have been to one of the tailors I have had fantastic results. You can give them a photograph and they will copy from that.
If you are coming to Shenzhen for the day from Hong Kong you will need an entry Visa. Although you can get this at the station, sometimes (on a rare occassion) they are not available from the station. It would therefore be advisable to get your visa before leaving home if your trip to Shenzhen is urgent.
The famous Women's World, which is an ideal place for purchasing clothing, is also located here. Other shopping zones like Nanshan, Renmin Nan and Shen Nan Zhong have their own characteristics. Apart from these, the Chinese and English Street located in Yantian District attracts lots of visitors since it is under the domination of both Shenzhen and Hong Kong. What's more, this is also a tax-free street.
