Australia voted the Ultimate Dream Holiday Destination in 2016
DREAMING of the ultimate holiday location to relax and be pampered? Turns out Australians don't have to look very far.
In a ray of sunshine for our struggling tourism industry, Australia has beaten locations like Italy and South Africa to be voted the world's top “dream holiday destination” in 2016 by readers of US-based travel magazine for the affluent, Virtuoso Life.
The results were detailed in the magazine’s sixth annual Travel Dreams report.
Australia was also voted among the world's best family getaways and Sydney scraped into the number 10 spot for the top 10 “Go-to style and design capitals” category.
It comes despite Australia failing to score mentions in lists compiled by other top travel websites earlier this year.
Iconic Aussie beaches such as Bondi failed to make it onto TripAdvisor’s list of the world’s top 25 beach destinations and the nation's hotels failed to be mentioned in a list of the world's best new hotels by Conde Nast Traveler.
Meanwhile, spending time on the high seas proved to be a favourite theme, with taking a world cruise, calling on all seven continents and sailing around the Mediterranean by private yacht ranking among the top three "Trips of a lifetime”.
Whether cruising on inner waterways or ocean-faring, Europe remained a favored destination.
Top dream destinations
1. Australia
2. Italy
3. New Zealand
4. South Africa
5. French Polynesia
