AVATON RESORT AND SPA - IMEROVIGLI, SANTORINI
by Julie Kriedemann
Nestled on the edge of the cliffs at the end of the lovely village of Imerovigli, is the Avaton Resort and Spa. A boutique hotel boasting nine cool and elegant rooms, including two suites with their own private Jacuzzi’s in which you can relax whilst watching the stunning sunsets from this amazing location.
It’s unique location, means that you are separate from the crowds and villas that are perched side by side, making it truly feel like you are in your own private paradise, yet a short stroll from the village and restaurants. With a walking trail passing my the hotel that takes you to Fira or Oia, depending on your photographic desires and energy!
The rooms are centred around the infinity pool overlooking the Caldera, towards Oia. There is no battle for sun loungers, and you don’t feel like you are intruding anyone’s space, which is remarkable considering that it is a small hotel, with a variety of guests from Honeymooners to friends on spa retreats. The rooms are neutrally decorated, with all the amenities you could want, and the small touches of fruit, wine and flowers on the room upon arrival add to the personalised feel. The staff are first class, discrete yet friendly and attentive, and nothing is too much trouble.
The spa, which is a rarity in Santorini, is set inside the caves, with a range of treatments, including ancient healing techniques to modern therapies to suit everyone’s needs, along with a Hydrotherapy pool, steam room and small sauna. Ask, Zoe, the head therapist for recommendations to suit your skin needs.
Food and eating at the hotel is a whole other experience, starting with your a la carte breakfast served at a time to suit you on your own terrace or balcony, to the signature menu available for lunch and dinner, featuring a range of Greek and Mediterranean dishes. Choose to dine Al Fresco, on the edge of the Caldera whilst enjoying one of Santorini’s magical sunsets and evenings or in ancient cave carved into the volcanic rock, lit with twinkling lights and candles. The fish is highly recommended, having enjoyed the best piece of Salmon I have ever had, yet the steak is succulent and mouth watering, clearly demonstrating the Chef’s high standards, that is clearly evident in the whole team of staff.
Laura (Ose), the manager is a wealth of information and recommendations, always smiling and cheerful and happy to help ensure your stay exceeds your expectations.
Having visited Oia and Fira, whilst staying at the Avaton Resort, I would highly recommend this jewel of a hotel. The sunset views we had were magical without the hordes of tourists, which made it all the more magical – if that is possible!
