Travel Tips for New Zealand

Changing you money to $NZ is always cheaper to do in New Zealand rather than the airport currency exchange. When you get to the airport in New Zealand just use the teller machine and withdraw money. It will automatically be in $NZ
Make sure you ALWAYS have plenty of fuel as some stretches are long between petrol stations and the winding road through the mountains can use a lot more fuel.
Allow more time than normal for travel as this can be slow through the mountains, especially in winter with snow and ice covering the road.
When you are staying at a holiday park check out the kitchen. We found there were lots of things left by people who had finished their trip and couldn’t take them with them. We left such items as fresh milk, washing up detergent, fruit etc.
Be careful where you “free camp” in most city areas this is NOT ALLOWED and can cost you a fine of $200. Check with the local i-site visitor information network.
Duty free alcohol is often cheaper to buy in New Zealand when you take into account the New Zealand dollar conversion.
New Zealand have a tax that is paid per Km that you drive and this is paid at the END of your journey. We travelled 1672km and it cost us almost $100. It’s important you are aware of this tax and allow for it.
