Multicultural Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia behind Sydney.
It is a city of stylish Victorian architecture, trams, fashion, food, theatres, art galleries and leafy gardens. Any night of the week you can be entertained in a splendor of local and international opera, ballet, comedy, live music, plays, performing arts and openings.
It is also a city mad for sports, with more world class facilities than many countries.
Few countries in the world have near their city centre international standard facilities like the Melbourne Cricket Ground (seats 100,000 fans and home of cricket and Australian Rules football); the National Tennis Centre; AAMI Park, which is the headquarters of rugby league, rugby union and soccer; and multiple other sporting facilities in the one complex.
Melbourne hosts events such as the Australian Tennis Open, the Australian Formula One Grand Prix, and the premier horse race that ‘stops a nation,’ the Melbourne Cup. It is also centre of Australia’s own brand of football, Aussie Rules.

The City Centre
Melbourne's central business district is very easy to get around because it is on a grid system. Walking is a great option for exploring the main shops in the heart of the city, otherwise the city circle trams are unbeatable for a quick and easy way to get around. Grab a day pass or multi day pass, so you can hop on and off trams/ trains / buses as many times as you like. They offer an extensive service area and visit all the popular tourist spots.
The city centre also has lots of great parks, with Victoria Markets on the northern fringe of the CBD and Southbank and the South Melbourne Market on the southern end.
A quick stroll or tram ride over the bridge at the iconic Flinders Street Station opens to almost 40 hectares (100 acres) of the Royal Botanic Gardens, established in 1846 along the banks of the Yarra River and comprising more than 8,500 different species of plants.
